I wanted to take a moment to spread the word about a program that my friend Sharon, of Three Irish Girls, has started called Knitters for Newtown. Touched by the elementary school tragedy in Newtown, CT, Three Irish Girls plans to do two things: knit 26 blankets for the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary victims, and raise $10,000 to donate directly to charities that will help them.
Three Irish Girls’ last fundraiser, the sale of a limited edition hand dyed yarn colorway, raised $5,100 for SHARE, a nonprofit that helps families who have lost babies. I have no doubt that they can meet their $10,000 goal this time around. They’ve raised over $4,000 since December 19th, and already have multiple active online groups making plans to knit and crochet 8″ squares that will be collected and assembled into blankets.
You can read more about the project on Sharon’s blog, or on the Knitters for Newtown Facebook page. The Spa Room would like to support Knitters for Newtown, and we have a special incentive for any of you inclined to help.
Knitters (and crocheters)–we’ll be collecting squares for the blankets through March 1, 2013. (Please follow the specs posted on their Facebook page!) Anyone who drops of a square at the spa will receive a $25 Spa Room gift certificate valid towards any full priced service.
If you don’t knit or crochet (or just prefer not to make squares) , but still want to contribute, you can make a donation here. Bring in a receipt from a donation or from the purchase of one of Sharon’s Knitters for Newtown colorways now through March 1st, and you’ll receive a $25 gift certificate valid towards any full priced service.
Projects like these make me proud to be a part of the knitting community, and I’ll be knitting some squares of my own. I hope you’ll join me in helping a really lovely small business spread some comfort in this difficult time.
